update problems

hi,
my friends notebook had the sasser. i removed it and
patched it. i am unable to get the windows update page to
load, i followed the instructions in knowledge about the
registry and fixed that. but still can't get to update
page says page can not be displayed. also i can't get to
the symantec site and a whole bunch of other antivirus
sites. i noticed that after i enter like www.symantec.com
or windowsupdate page and it has http:///?%
20www.symantec.com, and it does the same on the other
pages. i have uninstalled norton did disk cleanup and
checkdisk still with problems.

Sounds as if there's at least one other virus on that computer. I would
suggest making a set of rescue/scan diskettes from an antivirus program on a
known-clean computer (that has up-to-date signatures, of course!) and using
those to scan this system.
