Update Problem

Whenever I try to launch Windows update I get the
following resonse:
"The Windows Update software did not update successfully.
Below are some suggestions to help you proceed"

The following also appears:"Send error number to
Microsoft (0x800B0004)"

I have tried everything that is suggested to try and
rectify this problem, but nothing works.

The windows update log file has the following relevant
entries:
2004-05-05 17:05:04 16:05:04 Error IUCTL
Digital Signatures on file C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp\iuident.cab are not trusted
(Error 0x80092026: The cryptographic operation failed due
to a local security option setting.)
2004-05-05 17:05:04 16:05:04 Error IUCTL
Digital Signatures on file C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp\iuident.cab are not trusted
(Error 0x800B0004: The subject is not trusted for the

2004-05-05 17:05:04 16:05:04 Error IUCTL
Failed to download iuident.cab from
http://www.windowsupdate.com/v4/ to C:\Program

Can anyone please help with this?

Go to WINDOWS folder and look for a folder called CATROOT2, be careful of
don't get confused with the CATROOT (without "2" folder).
Once you have the CATROOT2 folder, simply rename it to any name you want and
try to go back to Windows Update and try to do the update again.

This sounds like a variant on one that has an easy cure, so try that:
Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.
