can i update windows XP home edition to windows vista beta, i do not want to
lose all of my pograms andhave no way to back them up other than dvd's.

Now or when it (Vista) is released ? Either way you would want to use
an Imaging program to protect your current setup. If your asking about
Beta-2 it is not a "Day-to-Day" use Operating System. You'll have little
if any vendor support and drivers and applications you use with XP may
not function. The Public Preview is for users to get a chance to see and
work with Vista, not use it on your primary computer. I'm not trying to
discourage it's use - but too many users are blindly upgrading their PC's
and then realize they cannot uninstall and return to XP.
As to your question - Yes, Vista will update over Windows XP but there
are some incompatible programs that should be removed before updating.

Vista is still in Beta form.. do NOT run it on your production machine..

i was going to say when it does come out will be able to upgrade from xp but
i would leave it a few months so all the bugs are all sorted with vista and
then upgrade.

I'm waiting until Vista SP2, minimum.

Note: BETA = TEST software! IT's mostly working, but likely to
(and does from what I've read) have bugs in it. Some may be
catastrophic.

NEVER install a BETA where you have to depend on it. Wait for it
to be released to the public as "real" software; it'll have a lot
fewer bugs, and hopefully none of them will be catastrophic.
In general, if you don't have a good reason to upgrade, you
should not upgrade, anyway. Being "first on the block" is also
"first to discover the bugs", the hard way. If you're not
computer savvy, wait until about 6 months after it's released, if
you really think you need it. If you don't know that you need
it, don't do it.
