Update: Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 final

A final till the next final !

And its still toying around.

Extensions for THIS and extensions for THAT.

Oops ..... the extensions for THIS still work with this version, but the
extensions for THAT are now broken.

Maybe by version 10 they will get operability and functionality built
into the dang thing. Why doesn't it just WORK, without having to load 3rd
party extensions ......

Could it be that Mozilla puts out a basic browser which don't take up much
room, and you (and/or I) can add extentions that we actually use?
I see a lot of extentions listed that I (personally) don't need or want.

Absolutely. I run about five extensions...just don't need any more
than that. I think I run one plug-in ( flash ).
I started out using FF from a security point of view, then found that
the tweakability of it is reason enough to use it in preference to IE.

As regards any version clashes...never really been a problem for me as
I tend not to regard announcements of new version as strict orders to
download and install. Give it a couple of weeks or so and it should
all update itself without any hassle.

Regards,

Replying to myself:
Just installed it over 1.5, it kept all my settings.
About 'improved stability': it crashed the very first time...
About 'fixes for several memory leaks': good job, v1.5 stayed in memory
for a while after closing, this one doesn't.

I allowed the auto update and it hung in memory. I tried to <CAD> to
get my task manager but it took about 2 minutes to load. Killed FIrefox
and restarted it. Took 2 minutes to load. Killed it. Rebooted.
Restarted Firefox. Launched in about the same amount of time.

Suggestion? Let it install and them reboot. Mind you this was on my
Windows box.

My update from 1.5 to 1.5.0.1 refused to work about 5 times last
night. The first time I closed and reopened it tonight it worked. Go
figure.

Any extensions installed? I've got Adblock, Filterset.G Updater,
FasterFox and BBCode and those didn't give me any problems.

The "User Agent Switcher" extension will make Firefox emulate IE,
Opera, and Netscape for web sites that require them. I've only used
it to fool IE-only sites, but I've yet to find one that it doesn't
fool completely. Needless to say, though, it won't do Active-X. I
haven't tried Microsoft, as I generally avoid them. I don't really
trust them, along with a few others.

3rd party extensions ...... thats the same as having to use BHO's in
IE, maybe even worse.

Being able to hand-pick the extensions I want and not having to have the
crap I don't want makes Firefox *more* attractive to me, not less.

Of course, people who aren't at all technologically savvy will prefer a
vanilla package like you suggest, even though it hogs resources and takes
a long time both to download and to load. Those people are welcome to go
use IE.

sudo rm -rf /home/Azzman:
It's a final.

Installed OK here, a few extensions (FoxyTunes and other that I don't
remember) needed updating, 2 or 3 are still missing updates.

Here's what's new in Firefox 1.5.0.1:

* Improved stability.
* Improved support for Mac OS X.
* International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is) is now enabled.
* Fixes for several memory leaks.
* Several security enhancements.

With all the controversial email generated here, I'm unsure if Firefox
1.5.0.1 final is reliable.
I've d/loaded and installed Firefox, but for now have kept Maxthon 1.5.2
[build21]Unicode as my default browser.

Sweet baby Jesus, it fixes 21 separate issues *all of which can be
used to execute arbitrary code*!

How did you come by that number? They list five critical security
fixes.
Did they have time to fix any vulnerabilities which were only
"somewhat critical"?

One high and one moderate security fix.

I have been using this release for about 2 1/2 weeks now. It works
great with no problems. The extensions all work with Mr. Tech's Local
Install.

I forget who recommended that extension to me originally, but you're
right.... "don't leave home without it."

One high and one moderate security fix.

While Mozilla identifies only 7 issues, Secunia lists 21 issues:
http://secunia.com/advisories/19631/
For quite a number of these 21 issues it means that
"Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code."
In general: the bugs "can be exploited by malicious people to conduct
cross-site scripting and phishing attacks, bypass certain security
restrictions, disclose sensitive information, and potentially compromise
a user's system."

Secunia rates the patch "highly critical," one notch below its most
serious ranking.

"We're identifying this as a critical release, and we're strongly
recommending that everyone update as soon as possible," Mike Schroepfer,
vice president of engineering at Mozilla, said in a statement.

Oh, yes, but we all know how secure Firefoz is, and how good it manages the
memory.

Strangely I haven't heard Mozilla croon about it being more secure than IE
for quite a while now.

Oh, it doesn't matter. It can be as insecure as it can be... it will never
be critisized and it's developers insulted to dead. It does not have the
letters MS on it, so it will can only praised :-)))))))))
