Update Manager

I am running windows vista home premium upgrade that came with my Dell
notebook. Every time I restart or turn on my computer I get an error message
from update manager. The error message is Error #-5 from installshield. I
have looked at the install shield consumer website but there is nothing
helpful listed there. Is anyone else getting this message and if so does
anybody have any solutions or how to fix this error. I do not seem to have
any problems with my operating system. Thanks for any help provided.

I have exactly the same error message and oddly enough I also use a Dell
laptop. I have tried unsuccesfully to ask all parties, all to no avail.
Annoying little thing added to all the other annoying Vista problems. Best of
luck to anyone who can help.

The message is probably coming from a third-party updater. Go to Control
Panel and set it to Classic view so you can find things. Look for a
Software Updater applet. This updater is usually installed with programs
like Roxio, Sonic, etc. Double-click it and disable the automatic updating.

Lol, thanks for the info John but I got a freeze. So for the time being I
will ignore the error message.

I am elso encountering the same undefined Installshield error -5, also using
a Dell machine and Vista Home Premium. I guess I will used the "ignore"
option proposed in this thread, or turn off the 3 programs that Installshield
is managing: Roxio Update Manager, Roxio Creator DE, and Installshield Update
Manager. But since this has been reported by several persons using a Dell
system, does this not suggest a possible incompatibility between Dell and
Vista that needs to be addressed by these manufacturers, perhaps along with
Installshield and the 3rd parties? If so, how do we get their attention?

I too have a vista home Dell and also have same error code with
installshield (error #5).
I have an even bigger problem (and yes, I went to their website and
tried their patch and disabled the roxio, et al.....)

I cannot seem to upgrade to service pack 2! I am wondering if the
installshield problem has anything to do with it. I have 32 bit machine
(Notebook-- inspiron 1520) and have service pack one. Am befuddled. Have
been tinkering around all day. Had three different error codes when the
machine crashed to blue screen and none are searchable on Google.
Perplexed to think I have the only computer in the universe with this
multifocal problem. Trying to pinpoint the culprit before I call Dell
Technical service.

Installshield shouldn't have anything to do with SP2 not installing. What
error do you get when you try to install SP2?
