Update Issue

FYI --

Two XP Home machines with all XP updates/patches

Both machines say definitions are 5729 but when I "check for updates" they
both again say they are updating form 5725 to 5729. Upon closing and
re-opening MS Antispyware, this repeats over and over. I had a similar
problem a month or so ago on one PC and it fixed itself after several days.

Below are the MD5 & SHA1 hashes. KB892519 doesn't show anything later the
5725 so I don't know if the Machine1 definitions really are 5727 or 5729.
Machine2 is really a mess as the gcthreatauditthreatdata matches definitions
for 5725 but the gcthreatauditscandata matches 5723.

I'm going to leave both machines as is for several more days and see if the
"check for updates" ever fixes this issue. If not, I'll manually cleanout
the Machine2 definitions and directories and update to 1.0614

Machine 1: 1.0.614 The "about" screen says definitions are 5429.

I don't believe 5729 is uptating itself properly in MSAS. I see the same
thing except I had 5727 before.

In updating from 1519 to 1521, many people experienced
the same problem. I think the problem is actuaully with
the copy of MSAS installed on the system.

The fix in the past was to uninstall MSAS using the
installer, not Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or
Remove Programs. To do this run the installer,
select 'Remove,' reboot the system, and re-install the
application. Using Add or Remove Programs can leave
behind remnants of the application, primarily in the
registry, which will cause the program to not be fully
removed, causing the problem to keep occurring until one
uninstalls the app using the installer.

I haven't removed the program yet. I will update this
reply in a few minutes and let everyone know if it works.

The fix for build 509 doesn't work for either builds 613,
nor 614. I think that a file has somehow become
corrupted, causing the system to tell the update server
that the latest definitions on the system are different
than what they turely are, causing the server to
constantly send the "new" set of definitions to the
system.

Andre Da Costa explained on 2005-06-27 :
I would recommend downloading again, uninstall restart and do a clean
install.

Well, this "bug" is well defined and it must be better to wait for
a solution from MS.

Andre Da Costa has brought this to us :
I am not having this problem anymore.

Hi

What date/timestamp ?
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd and
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

What happens if you perform a "check for updates" ?

I have the same problem. Updates over and over from 5725 -> 5729 but the
update appears to not happen at all. Machine below is Win2K SP4, same
thing happened on a second machine; WinXP SP2

Fresh install of MSAS on a machine that had never had it before:
- Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.613
- Spyware Definition Version: 5729 (6/27/2005 9:47:04 AM)
- Product ID: 76831-000-0000012-00123
- gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd = 6/9/2005
- gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd = 6/9/2005

Would these last two files be the ones I would need to update clients
offline?

Yes.

But to make this more confusing latest official version is
1.0.614......... :blush:Þ

And your def files is version 5725, dated June 9.

I'll give it until next week before I "fix" them -- I want to see if updates
will come through the normal "check for updates" as a production environment
will require it.

Thanks!

Plun and Andre... I have uninstalled and re-installed from a fresh
download (uninstalled, restarted, deleted files from MSAS folder). Exact
same problem, updates from 5275 -> 5279 but the update files don't
change date and next time I check for updates it does 5275 -> 5279
again. Note that the "about" info below lists ver 5729 but my files
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd & gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd are still dated
6/09/2005. No biggie just a note!

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.614
This version expires on: 12/31/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5729 (6/27/2005 1:54:21 PM)
Product ID: 76831-000-0000012-00123

If you know what you are doing :')
Follow this, all credits to user "Taxman":

- Download Winzip or 7-Zip
http://www.7-zip.org/

Download these 3 files, right click-save to disk.
Compressed files !

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcDeterminationData.gcz
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditScanData.gcz
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcz

- Open the first downloaded file and extract it with your Zip tool .
Do the same for the other.

- Right click on MSAS icon and choose shutdown.

- Copy/paste your extracted files to Program files / Microsoft
Antispyware
and choose to overwrite existing definition files.

- Start MSAS again and make a "check for updates" if you have latest
defs.

- If you have time, perform a full system scan directly with all
options checked.
