I installed SP2 recently with no problems. I have auto update set to
download and ask to install. While checking the update website, I found
KB834707 to be a recommended update. I've tried to download it several times
and get a failure with error code 80246005.

I may be a little dense. I see a fair amt. re: failed SP2 installs. Mine
went ok. One reference to just failed update w/ suggestion to reboot and try
again. I did that. No joy. Re: "Windows update newsgroup" I presume you mean
for me to post question there, correct? Thanks, Ken

P.S. I did find this in event viewer which I cannot seem to remember to
check first when there is a problem. "Event Type: Error

Are you running Small Business Server? If you are then there is a fix for
your problem. Microsoft says it has to do with the account that Windows
update runs under. Apparently the user that update runs under doesn't have
permission to access the internet using Small Business Server. It's a large
workaround so I'm not going to type it out. You can learn more and get the
instructions here --> http://support.microsoft.com/?id=838177
Let us know if this works.

Not running Small Business Server. I'm using Win XP Home. Thanks for the try
though.

Sorry, I initially thought small business server was an application rather
than an operating system. I found a post that mentions there may be a
connection with expired copy of Norton Anti-Virus. The actual text is:

Strange - As part of the updates I was doing on the laptop, I uninstalled
the expired Norton AV Trial Version & installed AVG Antivirus. After that I
tried one more time & the Windows updates downloaded without a hitch.

Is it possible that the out of date Norton AV impacted Windows Update??

Thanks anyway for the help - I downloaded the manual SP2 update file, but
didn't end up using it. (At least I now have a copy if I need it in the
future)

Also, here's a post that may help if you haven't seen it already -->
http://www.talkaboutsoftware.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/messages/121733.html

There is also mention of something called bits and an http hotfix that was
uninstalled and fixed the problem. See it here -->

I have resolved the problem, I think/hope. "Click start-> run
type services.msc then press enter
Look for the Automatic Updates Service, right click it and choose to stop
Click start->run
type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution then press enter
Open the DataStorage folder and delete its contents.
Click start->run
type services.msc
right click the Automatic Update Service and choose to start
Now try running the Updates again." This came from the Update newsgroup.
Thanks
for your effort,

Ken
