I wonder if anyone can help please?

I operate in XP home

I have disabled windows automatic update as it freezes my computer
completely.

The last successful update I had was 6th June 2006

When I manually try to update, it freezes totally after about 3/4 minutes. I
have to swithc offby holding the power button - nothing else works.

Could it be an infection that is disabling my download protocols?

If so how would I deal with it?

I have average home user computer experience.

I have no wireless connection

I use ADSL

Can anyone offer any help please?

Thanks

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. What is the Total,
the Commit Charge and the Peak?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

How large is your hard disk and how much free disk space? In
Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select
Properties. Is the hard disk formatted as fat32 or NTFS?

Are any of these spyware apps newly installed? that maybe coincide with the
problem
(AVG SpyBot & Adaware should be ok)
Run the RegCleaner? (Reg cleaners can be give unintended results)
I renently trialed two malaware apps that gave problems, one blocked access
to my remote backup, niether was configured to run in the background, they
had simply been installed

Are there any Error / Warning Reports in Event Viewer?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

What Firewall are you using?

Hello DL

The others were installed in March before the last download I was able to
do.

MaxPCsafe was installed in August - but this was after I had tried and
failed to download an update.

Sorry to top post, but thought I wouldkleave the rest for reference.

Thanks

There are no error reports or any events recorded prior to the 17th July.
The first - that is on that date - is as follows:-

I haven't yet checked on the links you have given me. I have just to go out
briefly to pick up my son and I will read them upon my return. This is in
the meantime - in case it gives you a clue.

Thanks

How to manually rebuild Performance Counter Library values
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300956/en-us

There have been problems reported with Zone Alarm. Disable it, enable the
Windows Firewall
and then try the Windows Updating service.
Thanks Gerry - tried that. Have disabled Zone Alarms but left it installed.
Enabled Windows Firewall and gone to Updates. Got to Checking for Latest
Updates and that commenced. 2/3 minutes and it all froze up again. I haven't
read the links you referred to - might they help?

Sorry for all this trouble - I naively thought someone would wave a magic
wand! I should really have known better!!!

There could well be an Error Report in Event Viewer.

Please post a copy of the Report

Thanks for all your input Gerry and DL

I am now out of my depth. I shall have to seek professional help I fear!

One last thing, the link you gave me Gerry, is for Windows 2000 and doesn't
mention XP. Does this link still apply please?

Regards

Richard.

Richard

It probably does but I cannot categorically say yes.
