I want to thank everyone very much for the help I have received on this.
I think I have finally gotten rid of all the viruses by doing the three
things Dave suggestedbut I still have the cheese wedge icons.I can't make
the repair icon cache work.
I did the below but get the message "cannot find file shelliconcache"
Any thing else I mighr try to get back default icons

(To delete the ShellIconCache:
at a command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot% folder
a.. remove the hidden attribute from the file:
type attrib -h shelliconcache and press ENTER.
b.. delete the file:
type del shelliconcache and press ENTER.
c.. logoff and backon and the default icons should be restored.

Glad to hear you have some resolution.

I suggest obtaining MS Windows TweakUI. This Control Panel Applet has a "Repair Icons"
capability.

The ShellIconCache file doesn't exist on XP. There it is (path split
over two lines):
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local
Settings\Application Data\Iconcache.db

The file must be deleted while the shell is not running (on all
systems, not just XP).

The shell is running as long as your desktop icons and the start
button are visible (hiding them behind a big window won't help ;) and
as long as any explorer or folder window exists.

The procedure on NT/W2K/XP is:

- open a CMD window (now you still can ;)
- close all explorer windows
- stop the shell, by clicking Start, Shutdown, and then holding
Shift+Ctrl+Alt while clicking Cancel.
- only the cmd window remains: now delete the file
- still at the cmd prompt, run 'explorer.exe'. This will restart the
shell, your desktop icons and taskbar will reappear instead of the
explorer window you'd get otherwise.

Logging off and back on is not necessary, but some tray icons near the
clock may remain absent until you do because their applications don't
re-create them automatically when the shell restarts.
