Not a hoax?
There is nothing about v. 1.60b on de CDex website.

Although it would be nice if they didn't do this, often software authors
release a beta for download from freeware sites without updating their
own page with information about the new version.

Softpedia is a fairly well known and reliable site though. Also note
that as I write this, the link " Softpedia Mirror (RO) - stable" is the
old 1.51 download and the first two download links have the newer beta.

Frankly, why not wait until the final 1.6 comes out. Betas have bugs.
What's new?

The author neglected to update the changes log in the download, so I
can't tell you.

Indeed but downloading and using the beta version might bring the
author some help to correct these bugs.

What puzzles me is that this software hasn't been officially updated
for 2 years, which often means that the author has definitely given up
its development.

Anyway version 1.51 works fine so I am not sure if there is any need
for updating it.

I agree John.

Surely anyone who willingly downloads a BETA, logically, accepts the task
of beta-tester ? Otherwise why would a programmer release a BETA ?

It really pisses me off when I see people bitching in a public newsgroup
than a beta has this, or that, wrong with it ....... and not even having
the courtesy of raising the 'issue' with the programmer first.

To summurize .... BETA versions are for BETA-TESTERS.

It's a personal choice of course. In my case, I do as little betaware as
possible.

Well, as far as CDex's forums are aware (as of April 24, 2005), there
has been no beta release. But they could be wrong.

I have a suspicion that this experimental build has been accidentally
propogated as a "beta" - when it;s really only a CVS build with a
minor tweak.

If you like bleeding edge bulds, if you use Mozilla nightlies etc., it
may be worth a look, but its a bulild based on the frozen state of a
project that's received little attention for some time.

No so much the author, but this movement might stir some interest from
any possible contributors, if only to give it a final polish to bring
it to an actual release.
