What Makes AbiWord Different?

AbiWord is unique among word processors in its drive to become a fully
cross-platform word processor. Our source code is carefully written so
that AbiWord will run on virtually any operating system with a minimum
of time spent on porting. This combined with our support for
internationalization (the ability to run AbiWord in many languages)
gives AbiWord a massive potential user-base.

Currently we run on most UNIX systems, Windows 95 and later, QNX
Neutrino 6.2. We also have a MacOS X native port available. There used
to be a BeOS port, but that version has been unmaintained for too long
and support for it has been discontinued."

Apart from a smaller size is it worth using it over OO?

Depends on what you mean by "using". Tasks(purpose) can link with size
but size shouldn't compromise a task(s) when deciding what program to
use over what, imo. It's relative, pointing to *task* as the deciding
factor when not determining which default opener to use(global) that
takes into account tasks in general, EG; I use AbiWord as default .doc
opener because of its size(speed) in opening over OO; 602Text and
'Corel Wordperfect/Office 10', which I got as part of a free software
bundle when buying my computer, which is .doc/excel bloatware from
hell costing a whopping $400 on the market a few years back! Every
time I opened Corel 10 it was like trying to crowbar the thing open
needing a jackboot heel against my monitor for opening leverage. My
tower sounded like a bull in a china-shop. Scraping magnetic plates
never sounded so good with task manager "CPU Usage" going kick ass
tilt into the ceiling zone. I'd much rather use Abiword over Corel 10
for just that reason, and I do!. OO as well was buggy as hell before
2.0 so I'd use 602 over it on larger tasks, but if a *task* demands
OO, then you use it. One of the hardest decisions to make when it
comes to using software is which program under what category is going
to get the default spot because one has to take into account all task
possibilities before making that global decision. For instance, how
many users go 'back and forth' on whether they're going to use Opera
of Firefox as their default browser? You have to weigh *all* potential
tasks before making the decision which includes architecture
differences weighed to preference and the bugs of a program, or trial
and error is your only option. So the question is; What program
satisfies what *tasks*, in general, to decide which goes over what.
That's for you to decide relative to what you use the computer for.
Just my opinion ;-)

which remark led me to have a look at AbiWord. It loads a huge dll
(more than 9 Mb) and was very slow in opening. I don't like the
interface either. No serious competition for OOo Writer at all. (FYI,
I always defragment newly installed files with Power
Defragmenter/contig.exe.)

It's like comparing apples and oranges.
The answer is depending on the task.

My wife is using only AbiWord because it is serving her word-processing
tasks very well.
(She has never needed WordViewer after AbiWord version 2.4.)
Because AbiWord is relatively simple, it is also very easy to discover and
utilize the capacities in the program.

Others might have needs that is going beyond what AbiWord can deliver and
should, consequently, use another app.

I think it's irrelevant to compare the two programs.
They are serving different purposes, and they are both doing that very
well.
