I downloaded a new wallpaper and now my home page that was comcast is now thw site I downloaded the wallpaper from. I'm really new at all this & I do not know how to get comcast back as my homepage.... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

open internet explorer, click on tools, internet options, you will see in the address line a web address, click on use blank and then type in http://www.comcast.com or net whichever it is and then select apply at the bottom.

Open Control Panel
Click Internet Options
You can type what you want in the address box.

In the future, you should closely watch what you click.
Most likely you clicked Yes to a box asking to make their page the
home page.

You probably downloaded a file that is associated with spyware programs. I
see you wrote that you are new to computers. If you have any questions about
running these programs below, just let me know and I will help you out.

Anti-virus software and firewalls do not fully protect your system against
the majority of spyware and privacy threats. Spyware is commonly bundled
with software downloads, attached to e-mails, or transmitted through
networks so it can appear to be legitimate software, but once installed it
can be nearly impossible to detect and remove without the help of a
dedicated spyware removal tool such as:

Ad-Aware 6.0 (build 6.181)

SpyBot 1.3

SpyWare Blaster

HiJackThis

Please make sure that you download the updates for each of these programs to
ensure complete detection of known spyware programs. Although nothing is
absolute in removing spyware and keeping it off, downloading and executing
the programs above can dramically decrease future infections.

After Spyware / Adware is remove, you may get an error finding files on
reboot

After you use anyone of these programs (with the exception of HiJackThis)
you may receive an error of some sort after rebooting your system. This is
pretty common. Many spyware programs add themselves in the Startup location
and execute when Windows boots. If you recieve an error when rebooting after
removing spyware, do not panic. This is more than likely a startup remnant
trying to access the spyware program that is no longer on your computer.
HiJackThis is a great utility to find and remove these startup remnants.
However, there is a less technical way of removing these items:

(1) Click START to RUN and type: msconfig
(2) Select the STARTUP tab
(3) Uncheck the file that pertained to the startup error message you
received
(4) Click APPLY and OK
(5) Reboot your system

If this fails to fix the startup error message after reboot, there are still
options:

(1) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup
(2) Delete the icon that pertained to the startup error message you received
(3) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup
(4) Delete the icon that pertained to the startup error message you received
(5) Reboot your system

Thank you so very much, I can't believe how darn easy that was. I'm still new at this so I hope I did'nt sound like a complete fool....

(e-mail address removed)

Does anti-virus software come already downloaded? I just want to make sure I have it. I'm constantly getting banner & small ad pop-ups & it's driving me crazy.

Check that messenger service is disabled. click start run and type
services.msc

That is so bad a fix it is no fix at all.
It can actually be dangerous at many are lulled into a false sense of
security because the Messenger Service ads are stopped.

For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/

Also see:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/security.htm

I can't believe how many big feeling jerks I run across on news groups! So
what I didn't tell him to run a firewall! what makes you think he's not
running one??!!!

Your "fix" will only stop Messenger Service ads, nothing more.
If he is getting those ads, it is because there is no firewall of the
firewall is improperly configured.
So if he is getting those ads the problem is the firewall or lack
thereof.
That not only makes me think, it also lets me know about his firewall
issue.

The fact you need to insult others to emphasize you point reflects
more on your character than on anyone else.

I did'nt mean to cause a problem, I was just trying to get my wallpaper issue
resolved. And to top it off, I'm still trying to understand the whole
"computer" system and I feel like a real dope. So because I don't know what
the heck the "firewall" is I'm still trying to learn everything. Thank you so
very much for taking the time to help me.... your answer did the trick!

Can I you another question; it happens quite often, I'll be typing something
in my yahoo personal messenger & then suddenly I'm kick out & have to sign
back in again, in addition to those damn pop-up & banner ads it's enough to
drive you crazy!
Is it something with the internet or is it something within my computer that
I may have not set-up correctly. I'm still learning how to manage everything
and boy the complicated terminology that is sometimes used when you want an
answer about something makes me feel like maybe I should have never asked the
question!

went to Navtech.com to find a graphic. When I was done there was a
navtech.com icon on the desktop.....now..it's not the typical icon that you
can get rid of, it won't go away. It has no interaction with mouse buttons,
meaing I can't click on it. It's somehow stuck there, maybe a wallpapaper but
I don't know how to get rid of it. I'd sure like to. Please help out...thanks
in advance.
