I am using win2000 and each I cilck on an icon on the desktop for example, I
get the ding.wav sound. How can I turn this one feature off ,as I want to
use other sounds rather than just turn the volume down or off?

Start > Control Panel > Sounds
I think that's where you'll find the options to alter your sound schemes
etc etc etc

Thanks, I've been looking there and changing various
settings in an attempt to stop it. I just can't seem to
find the right setting that has to be changed.
Thanks anyway
