Unwanted popups

R

Ryan

I am using XP Home version and have been invaded by
unwanted popups taking over my computer. I have deleted
everything I can think of that might cause this, but I
still can't find the imbedded program causing this. I
woudl appreciate any help anyone can give me. I can't use
my computer the way it is and am considering using it as
a boat anchor instead.

If these are "Messenger" pop-ups, they can be banished by enabling the XP
built-in firewall (which should be done anyway). See HELP & SUPPORT for
easy instructions.

If this is a program that has been inadvertently installed on your PC,
running ADAware may enable its removal. http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Read the instructions, download, install and run the program. The basic
utility is free.

If the pop-ups are site-related - the page that is being visited - then a
pop-up blocker may help. http://google.com Search for "ad blocker".
Or install and use a new-generation browser that has pop-up blocking,
such as NetScape "streamline Navigator only" from http://sillydog.org/narchive

It will selectively block pop-ups and images, and is much more customizable
than I.E. For more...
sis the newgroup.

Or visit http://mozilla.org for links to browsers using similar technology.

.
Download the freeware program "spybot" and run it. It
took care of 98% of my popups with WinXP.

designed to send messages to employees in a work
enviorment but advertizers have dicovered it and are
sending popups through it

Hi Ryan,

If the title bar reads as MESSENGER SERVICE, then it the world famous
Messenger SPAM. Install a Firewall to prevent the pop-ups. Enable the
Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP:

1. Open Network Connections
2. Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to
protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this
connection.
3. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select the
Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this
computer from the Internet check box.

This blocks the TCP ports responsible for Messenger data tranmissions and
prevents Pop-ups.

what sort of pop ups? if it's a popup text message from the messenger
service than stopping the messenger service will do it. if they're ads
and porn and stuff, download and run spybot search and destroy and
adaware. that should take care of your problem.
