When my windows XP home edition starts I get a toolbar
popping up that leads to adult content sites. The
toolbar installed itself and I can't find where to remove
it. I have removed all the entries from internet
explorer, but can't find the reference to the toolbar
anywhere in windows. I have searched the startup folder
and registry entries. Does anyone know where to find the
reference and how to delete it? thanks.

Terry,

Using ToolbarCop to remove the unwanted Toolband, Toolbar Icons and BHO:

Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system and eliminate the parasites.

The toolbar didn't install itself, it was installed as part of an adware or
spyware piece of software that was installed on the machine. www.spybot.com
or www.adaware.com can provide you with powerful free tools to remove this
from your system.

The toolbar could have installed itself....ive had it
happen to me....and i hate it

No the toolbar couldn't have installed itself. When software "appears" out
of no where it is because of some other action that the user took. You may
have clicked yes to a message that was meant to deceive you into clicking
yes, you may have visited a web site that contained JavaScript to install
the toolbar and you didn't have your browser settings set to prompt you or
disable such scripts. There is always a reason why or how the software gets
on the pc and it is ALWAYS because the user did or didn't do something.

Things don't just happen, we either make them happen or let them happen.

You're right you're just 15. and I'm 32 - so what's that got to do with
the proverbial "price of eggs"?

Actually there are several of these that do install themselves simply by
visiting the wrong website. (Some of these sites pretend to be search sites
that come up if you mistype a legitimate domain name.)

Yes. If your Security settings are not configured properly, the toolbars install themselves stealthly.

Nope, it came with some shitware you installed.

Sorry Plato, your wrong on this one.

visiting a website.
You don't have to install a thing, and just clicking on the "no" button
when/if you
are prompted is not enough. I have actually visited some of these sites
accidently simply
by mistyping a URL in the address bar (like www.mvp.org and www.mvps.org)
I have never had one get installed on my personnal machine as I have popup
blockers
and antivirus software installed, but I have seen it install itself on other
machines and
I have cleaned my fair share of these monstrosities off of friends and
reletives computers.

Two programs are good at removing these adult toolbars...
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com
and SpyBot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org

They are free, are updated regularly and will remove
spy/adware. SpyBot's free version will also "immunize" you
against about 500 bad programs. Ad-Aware doesn't do that
unless you pay them for the pro version.

Also you need a current updated anti-virus program running.

You should set your browser's security settings to at least
MEDIUM and be sure you have install all the Windows Critical
Updates.

Scott,

Go away and/or chill out. Your replies seem to be based on your own
personal actions/interpretations, etc.

Some of these folks are general XP computer users. Each and every scenario
can be different for whatever reasons....... Treat them uniquely or simply
don't reply.

Kelly, you need to stop following me around like a puppy.

My responses are based on facts and I am attempting to help the user by
explaining how spyware/adware/viruses can wind up on their pc without their
knowledge but with their assistance.

Please take your registry hacks and go away and stop bothering me.

Yes and my point was that if you don't have your security set correctly,
then you allowed the toolbar to install, it doesn't just magically appear
from nowhere.

Greetings --

When visiting porn sites, always be careful not to
download/install their "free" viewers. You'll get more than expected,
every time. To repair the current situation, uninstall the
"viewer(s)" provided and then use Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and
SpyBot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/ to clean up
any residue. Both have free versions for personal use.

You should also try using MSConfig to see if something is being
started each time you reboot.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
