unwanted line of dots

Hello,

An unwanted line of dots appears in my MS-Word 97 file. I cannot delete the
line. When I pass the cursor over it, the cursor sometimes looks like it
does when you pass it over the lines of a table to move them. But I
nonetheless cannot move the unwanted line.

The only fix I have found is to save the file (3000 words) as text and copy
it into word again, reinserting the tabs.

Is there not a less tiresome fix?
