Unwanted internet downloads

Why does my MSN messenger always start to download the new
version (6.0) of the program. I have not asked it to do
it, it just automatically seems to do it in the background
which is stupid. Version 6.0 does not work with my network
and connection setup for some reason (which I have not
been able to work out becasue no one will help me). Can I
stop this very very annoying situation as it is slowing my
dial-up connection considerably?
