Windows XP unwanted dotted line attached to style

While assembling an MS Word document containing several sections, I used the asterisk to create a dotted line. That was fine for a while, but somehow I now have a dotted line attaching itself to some of the styles I've created. I can't erase the line or change the style. Yet, I can see that the line style is defined as follows:

Normal + Bottom: (Dotted, auto, 3 pt. line width, From text: 31 pt Border sp)

Can anyone please help me figure out how to get rid of this style? This happened once before, and I ended up trashing the document because I couldn't get rid of it.

Sure would appreciate any wisdom you can share.
