unwanted dial up

Something is dialling up and staying on-line without
apparently doing anything else. However, it uses up my
agreed time with my ISP.

This happens at various times, including just after start-
up, and before any other application has been started or
closed. It also happens at random intervals, sometimes in
a rapid sequence, sometimes only every couple of minutes.

Is there any utility in W2000 that will enable me to
identify what application is dialling so that I can deal
with it ?

Any advice will be gratefully received.

I would be a bit scared to open your telephone bill. Get Spybot and Adware
and get these diallers off your machine! Run a virus check too!

Cody,
Thanks for your reply. Luckily I have a fixed price
contract with my ISP. I already run Spyhunter, Zone Alarm
and PC-Cillin. Will Adware add anything to these?

Unluckily, if the dialer is dialing another number, say one of those very
expensive numbers, your ISP has nothing to do with it.

I would run both AdAware and Spybot, Search and destroy. I would also run an
online virus scan. What those dialers do is use your modem to dial a number
that costs A LOT per minute, you know, like the numbers for phone sex?

In IE go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, make sure it is
set to "Never dial a connection."
