Unwanted auto-updates

The MS Windows XP auto download has presented me with a programme update for
MVM that is not on my machine.
The auto download MSN update icon in the toolbar is constantly awaiting
download and
installation. When I allow it I am advised that as I haven't got the
original, the update can't be applied.
Well that is quite understandable, but the icon won't go away and I can't
find a way of getting rid of it.
Can anyone help me please?

Turn automatic updates off via the control panel > system > Automatic
Updates.

When you update in future use the Custom not Express option on the
update site - this gives you more choice in what you wish to download.
I have never been happy to allow windows to download and install stuff
at will its asking for trouble - no?

Get rid of the Icon - dunno never ever used auto updates so I have
never had to get rid of one, however updates mostly download to this
folder

C Drive /Windows/ Software Distribution.

but your MVM update may go somewhere else, if sop you will have to dig
for it.

When you find the offending download change its extension to .old then
see if the icon vanishes. Give it a couple of hours and no if problems
occur delete it.
