Unusual floppy drive behavior

ThinkPad 390E with Windows XP Pro

Using Windows Explorer or My Computer and clicking on the A drive icon
produces an "i/o" error. Trying to copy a file to the diskette produces the
same error message. Right clicking on the icon will bring up the menu after
a two or three minute delay. Clicking on "properties" will then show the
actual used and free space on the diskette after another two or three minute
delay.

Device manager says the drive is working properly. XP says it has the best
driver installed.

Interestingly enough the computer will boot from the A drive.

My Googling turned up another person experiencing the exact same problem,
but no one had offered him a solution.

Does anyone have an idea of what's going on with my floppy drive?

I'd suggest replacing it but first check to make sure the cables are
connected tightly.

A bad floppy disk? Try accessing a known good (perhaps the bootable) disk.
The disk you are trying to open/copy to/view properties may be stuffed.
