Is there a global way to identify which picture files are unused (unlinked)
or do I have to click on each individual gif or jpeg and click on
hyperlinks?

Thanks, Darryl

If you are using FP2002, open your web in FP, then click on Reports on the
left Views bar. then click on "unlinked files". This will show you a list
of all the unlinked files in your website (including pictures)

If you use the method Nabil recommended (I would recommend this also) be
careful when you delete the unused pictures.
I've found that FrontPage will think pictures aren't linked/ used if they're
backgrounds in cells/ tables etc. and if they're only used through style
sheets.

PS
Or in scripts / webbots
