I have windows xp on a toshiba laptop. Upon switching on
the computer does not bring on windows. It gives options
for safe mode and normal configuration but this gives
rise to message "missing dlls kernels".

I do not know how to fix and am scared that if I put the
recovery disk in it will reformat the hard drive and I
will lose data.

Any one have any ideas for dealing with this issue?

Sounds like your system is hosed. The Toshiba recovery disk will wipe the
harddrive clean before reinstalling the OS and application software. You do
"do regular data backups" right? If not, you may have to either, give the
laptop to a data recovery specialist to recover your data, or purchase a
copy of WinXP Home or Pro upgrade and do a repair install - either way your
looking at a least $100 if you fix it yourself.
