On the right hand side of my desktop there's this vertical "tray" of
subjects, e.g., insurance, dating, etc. At the bottom is a close button, but
it comes back upon startup. This began a few days ago and I tried "Display
settings" to remove it but doesn't see what causes this. Thanks!

Thanks, I tried Ad-Aware but that and SpyDoctor froze my computer until I had
to disconnect everything 3 times until I was finally able to use my browser
again. I see a lot of postings advising to use "safe mode". How do I do this?
Thanks again!

What versions of Ad-aware and SpyBot ?

They should be Ad-aware SE v1.06 and SpyBot S&D v1.4.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure of the versions but it was Ad-Aware Se
and another tool called Spy Doctor. Anywho, how do I perform scans and
cleanups as advised from the other postings in "Safe Mode"?. I'm afraid of
"shocking" my PC again. Thanks!

You tap the F8 key several times upon boot and it will provide a menu wehere you cvhoose
"Safe Mode".

You can also use the free Boot Safe utility from SuperAdBlocker

I had the exact same thing happen to my computer. I tried Ad Aware,
SpyDoctor, Pest Patrol Spybot and ran three different virsus scanse to no
avail. I found the bitmap files for the images that appeared on the desktop
at startup in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and when I deleted them they
were regenerated at next boot. I went to "run" and entered "msconfig" and
looked in the startup window. There I found and exe file, whoes name
escapes me, which was not familiar to me. Upon examining it, I found it was
not a Windows file and deleted it. That ended my problem, no more adds on
my desktop at startup.

Bill
