Unread Mail Search Folders

For some reason a couple of our users are having problems deleting emails
from the "Unread Mail" Search folder in Outlook 2003. When they delete a
message from the Unread Mail it reappears a second later. This kind of makes
sense because it's still an unread mail, but it's now in the Deleted Items.
The next time they delete the same message from the Unread Mail it finally
goes away.

However, on everyone else's computer the email goes away the first time the
user deletes the message from the Unread Mail. Is there anyway to set the
message to disappear from the Unread Mail search folder the first time the
user deletes the message or will these few users have to delete the message
twice. Thanks.

If they hold the Shift key down when they delete it, it will not get moved
to the Deleted Items folder.

However, your question begs another: why are people deleting messages they
haven't read (assuming they're not junk)?

Thanks. Sure, holding the Shift Key and Delete is a workaround, but I don't
know why only a few users are experiencing this problem. Everyone has
Outlook 2003 SP1.

And to answer: why are people deleting messages they haven't read (assuming
they're not junk)?

The two users have the Right Reading Pane enabled, so they can read it and
delete without opening the message.

You've given the clue to your own solution: the people with no trouble have
enabled the option to mark as read messages seen the Reading Pane. The ones
with the problem have not. Tools>Options>Other>Reading Pane.
