Unread folder corrupted

I clicked "send/receive" which downloaded a sizeable number of new emails
(27MB) on Outlook 2003 (using a 2002 .pst file). At the end of the download,
there was a message saying there was insufficient space on the file and I
should reduce the file size.
I then clicked on the Unread email which gives an error "Unable to display
the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook could not access the specified folder
location. The operation cannot be performed because the object has been
deleted."
It's unclear to me whether the new emails are still on the PoP server or
deleted or whether the pst file is partially corrupt (the various other
folders read fine).

Any ideas would be welcome to re-download the files (I have clicked
send/receive again and it does not re-download the 27MB of files)

Unread is simply a view of your inbox.
Why use a 2002 data file if you have 2003? - 2002 has a size limitation 2003
format does not
Have you, with outlook closed, run scanpst.exe against your data file?
