whenever i open up to log in the microsoft windows xp
page, it has a message like '280 unread email messages'
under my user name. i have no idea how to get to
these 'unread email messages'. i get all of my email
through msn messenger and i don't have 280 unread email
messages there. So where is this message coming from and
what do i do?

This happened to me in my old Windows 9x days. It turned out to be that I
had not marked messages as being read, either directly or keeping opened for
30-60 seconds before deleting. As to how to remove the message or its
cause, I defer to the more adept on the subject.

Compliments of Kelly:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To remove an account or to change the count manually Got to:
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.
