Unmountable_boot_volume when installing windows xp

I have a machine with AMD K7 1500+ CPU 512 MB RAM and a western
digital HD of 40 GB on a PCchips 825 motherboard (2003). When I try to
reinstall Windows XP on this machine I get a bluescreen stating
"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" and the machine stops. The message pops up
before I even reach the point where I can run the recovery console.

The strange thing is that I succeeded in installing Ubuntu linux on
the same harddisk, which I tried to eliminate a defective controller/
harddisk. I also tried another hd with the same result.

I'm thinking of buying a thirdparty hd controller, but if it would be
possible to prevent the cost I would appreciate the help.

Does anyone have a clue what I could do to solve the problem?

Thx

In advance.
