The other day, upon load up, windows will not load up at all. I get past the
bios setup and then get the WindowsXP load up screen. After the load up
screen i get a blue screen that flashes on the screen and then reboots the
pc. This blue screen goes by so fast, it is impossible for anyone to see
what the screen says. we ended up taking our digital camera and record the
process. we were then able to find out what the screen says. we even
attempted to boot up in safe mode. when we do this, it starts to load up a
bunch of files in dos promts and always stops on agp44.sys file. no idea if
this is important or not. we have not installed any new hardware for at
least 30-40 boot ups. it was never the best of pc's but always worked. any
idea would be appreciative.

The following is what the screen displayed and is slightly paraphrased for
lenght.

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at both
ends.
Laptop/Portables:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download
their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay software
which is not needed anyway.

Usually going to the Recovery Console & running a good CHKDSK will clear it
up. Especially after "a loss of power".
Have your retail XP CD (or a good , full feature OEM CD ) ready.
Set pc BIOS boot sequence to boot first from CDROM. Boot from XP CD. Get
into Recovery Console. It is the second option line on the XP CD main menu:
it will say (on screen Welcome To Setup) :
"To repair a Windows XP installation using "Recovery Console" press R .

Login to XP with administrator password.
On your system drive, run "CHKDSK /P". I'd run it twice, just to make sure
there are no errors.

At finish, remove CD, restore boot sequence in BIOS, and carefully try
Windows login.

The following are some general hints on the problem:
Recommend you see/study this MS article: Article ID: Q297185 , titled
"STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Error Message During Windows XP
Upgrade
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;q297185

Note it also does refer to this condition beyond any upgrade process....it
may occur after XP has been setup/working.

Is Mounted (Q315403)

If you have ATA-66 - 100 -133 disk controllers, make sure the cables are of
the right type (80 wire cables / aka Ultra-ATA IDE cables). There have been
several postings on "unmountable boot volume" and they were using the
older-type IDE cables.
CONVERSELY, if you have the older IDE connectors on motherboard, use 40-wire
cables!

Note also: If you have removable storage like a Firewire device, that may
sometimes/somehow contribute to this condition.

Next, recheck master/slave jumpers/settings on all cables to hard drives, CD
devices.

That is the wrong STOP code for an Unmountable_Boot_Volume error. It
should be 0x000000ED
