Access 2003

Split front and back end on server (.mdb)

Shortcut to users desktop.

2 users.

one of the machines gives the "Unknown Publisher" popup and that machine
will not open the file if it is already open on the other machine.

both machines are 2003 but the one with the popup does not have sp2 and the
other one does.

not sure which of these are causing my problem but I know how to solve the
update issue.

How do I get rid of the "Unknown publisher" pop-up

Thanks

Thanks Chris,

How do I have the user trust the publisher? Does this mean I have to provide
a "Digital certificate"?

Thanks you. I will have the security set to low.

Is this the reason it would NOT open in a multi-user environment or
can just the difference in service packs cause that?

That eliminates that choice. If you don't have the db app digitally
signed
already, the other user didn't have to trust it. That means the other
user
has his macro security set to low (or is using automation security to do
that,
but she'd tell you if that was true). The problem user can do the same
thing.

Have the user click on Tools > Macro > Security in Access. Select Low.
When
the dialog closes, the next message pops up "Unsafe expressions are
blocked...
Do you want to allow the evaluation of potentially unsafe expressions?"
Click on the "Yes" button.

The user with the unknown publisher needs to trust the publisher of the
digital certificate or else change macro security to low.

They are "shortcuts" from the server, not "copies".

When they had copies they were stepping on each other - (high usage). (But
they both opened fine at the same time).

Will updating "office" to SP2 or SP3 (on both machines) also get Jet and
MDAC to equal levels?

Thanks Chris,

I guess I have some homework to do. :(

I appreciate the time you took here.

So you have one front end, it's on the server, and they each have a
shortcut
to open the same front end db file, right? That's *shared", not
multiuser.
You're losing nearly all the benefits of a split db and keeping all the
hazards of sharing a networked Access db.

If they were stepping on each other with different front ends, something
is
wrong with the db app design. And the situation doesn't improve by
sharing
the same db file on the server. That only slows the app down and can make
things worse, like corruption and errors like "Can't do this because you
don't have exclusive access" to the db.

Updating Office 2003 to sp2 or sp3 doesn't affect the sp levels of Jet or
MDAC. Those are separate Windows components. Office 2003 installs the
latest sp for Jet 4, which is sp8. The latest MDAC version is 2.8 sp1,
which
you already have if you have Windows XP sp2 or later.

Are they both opening the *same* front end on the server? That's a
*shared*
