"unknown" dialog box pops up when I open a .mdb file with Access 2

"unknown" dialog box pops up when I open a .mdb file with Access 2003. it
says Microsoft Office Access on the blue bar at the top of the dialog box and
in the box it just says unknown and closes access.
has anyone seen this error before and know a fix?

Try holding down the Shift key as you're opening the database to
bypass any startup code.

Either the startup code is generating this error; or your database is
corrupt; or your installation of Access is corrupt. Can you open other
databases, such as the Northwind sample?

The installation of Access / Jet might be corrupt.
