unintentionally reformatted files

I have XP and my computer is renaming my word files and
changing their format so that they are unusable. The old
file might be "Eng303" and the new name is "~$g303". The
new file has about three rows of squares and then pages
of nothing. Whatever is happening, it is going slowly
through all of my files.

HELP.

Word creates temporary files with such names, but there is a virus that
randomly deletes Word files, and this is what I think is happening here.
Make sure that your antivirus measures are up to date.
