Hello,

I am having problems with my home networking. My wife wanted the network so
that we could share files so I installed it. Only thing I didn't think about
was how slow her computer was.

My computer's performance has degraded immensely. What I want to do is
remove my computer from the network or dissolve the network completely. It
is proving much harder than installing the network....Please Help!!!

Your computer's performance should be completely unaffected by a slower
computer being on the network. Of course, you haven't given us any
information about your network and the computers on it so you can't get
focused troubleshooting.

Are you using ICS and have the old computer as the gateway? If not, then
something else is wrong. I've had Win95/98 machines on the same
ethernet network as blazing fast machines with no problems whatsoever.

Here is a link that will help you craft a good newsgroup post. This is

chances of getting accurate advice:

A Wireless Network is what the whole world is installing. Each PC connects
to the Wireless Router and not "through" each other.

When I read posts in the Windows XP Wireless networking newsgroup, I realize
that configuring wireless routers, computers, and entertainment devices can
be painful for new users. I also have friends who would love to wirelessly
stream music to an entertainment center in their living room or send
pictures over a wireless network to their family room TV. But complex
configuration steps discourage them from trying.

1. Cox, MSN, Bellsouth, etc. offers a free Westell or other brands of DSL
Modems.

2. Bestbuy, CompUSA, etc. have Netgear, Hawking, etc. Wireless Routers for
$5 after Rebate.

3. Connect the Ethernet LAN Cable.

4. Connect by USB Wireless.

5. Way you go - connecting.

If all you want to do is disconnect 2 computers from each other, in Windows
Networking, simply:
1) Stop then Disable the Server and Workstation services.
2) Uninstall Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing for
Microsoft Networks, in the network items list in Local Area Connection -
Properties. Basically, reverse the advice in this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components>
3) If you've made any shortcuts from one computer to the other, delete the
shortcuts.

But why do you have 1 computer slowing down the other? That sounds like a
problem in network design. You should fix the problem. File sharing between
computers is what computers are designed for.

If you like, and you haven't finished breaking your connections, provide
"browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, and we'll diagnose the
problems themselves. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:

If his faster PC connects to or through his slower PC then it is affected.
