Uninstalling Mcafee on Vista

A

Andy

Had to uninstall Mcafee Security centre on Vista the other day and it came
up with a message 'to uninstall properly you need to reinstall Mcafee from
the CD ROM and the uninstall it again' Then it said something about this is
the wrong programme for this operating system and something about
compatibility and it still left me with a couple of mcafee things running in
services that couldn't be disabled by services or msconfig.

Anyway I thought OK I will use the mcpr.exe tool to clean up Mcafee and that
didn't seem to work. I then got in touch with Mcafee chat technical support
to which the woman said that the mcpr.exe tool was for windows xp and that '
the technicians are working on a mcpr.exe tool for Vista but its not ready
yet!'

So there you go I just wanted to let others know just in case anyone else
has problems taking Mcafee off their PC with Vista on it. It was a DELL
Dimension PC pre loaded with Vista Home Basic by the way if that's any help.

Ten Problem number 2 came when it kept saying 'compatibility assistant' on
every startup with Sonic DLA and said it could cause the system to become
unstable. So I had to uninstall 'Drag to Disc' from the uninstall program
panel! (I know that's got nothing to do with Mcafee but I just thought I
would mention it)

Andy.

Any AV installed in XP needs to be uninstalled in XP before the upgrade to
Vista. Same with Sonic DLA. Yes it can be a problem removing programs that
don't work in Vista, after the upgrade. It's best to remove all these
before hand.

But this was a newly delivered PC from DELL! - so could a person predict
that DELL had originally loaded the Dimension with XP first and the McAfee
and the Sonic software but then upgraded it to Vista home basic before
shipping it out but not taking off these programs before upgrading to
Vista? - its a bit naughty and sloppy if this is what they are doing isn't
it?

To me and the message that came up it looked to me like the Trial version of
Mcafee security suite they had installed on the Dimension was designed for
XP and not vista and that's where the problem lies. They did not supply a
McAfee CD ROM Installation CD and when I logged onto DELL Chat to ask where
the CD was they said they don't supply CD's for trial programs. But here
this message was coming up in Vista saying install your CD ROM!

Its all a bit sloppy and unprofessional.

Since this PC is new the best approach is to contact Dell customer
service for a resolution to the problems. Have a great day.

Ok your post was unclear. I thought you meant an upgrade was done from XP
to Vista with these programs installed, but what you mean is this was a
system that came preinstalled with Vista and those programs. Di you call
Dell and complain about their installation not working?

Thanks tried it through Dell Chat and it couldn't be resolved - well only
for the technician to say keep looking out for update on the Mcafee Site
because Windows Vista was brand spanking new that it could have teething
problems. Told me same happened with XP when it first shipped. So its a
matter of waiting now I suppose for these teething problems to get sorted
out.

Yes, although I didn't mention that I thought that what they might have done
is upgrade from XP to Vista without removing the incompatible
drivers/software first maybe I should have done. But I cannot be 100 percent
sure this is what they did I am just surmising.

On this subject say if there is incompatible drivers/software after Vista is
loaded is there a built in tool one can use in Vista to check all throughout
the hard drive for incompatible stuff?

The resolution isn't to go through Dell Chat. You purchased an
inoperable computer, the resolution is for Dell customer service to
authorize a repair or replacement. Have a great day.

I know of no such tool. I seriously doubt they installed Vista on top of
XP. OEM's lay down their install from an image. You sure have had lots of
problems with this installation. Maybe you should call Customer Support to
return it.
