Uninstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro 8--Win Xp Pro

Yesterday when I fired up Acrobat, I got a courtesy message that an update
to 8.3.1 was available. I decided to try it, so hit the necessary buttons,
and off it went. An hour later it seemed to have stalled. A window showed
there 2 minutes left in the install. 30 minutes later it hadn't changed. I
called Adobe, and they said I had to bring down all internet connections. I
terminated the install, and later rebooted for other reasons. It continued.
I opened nothing, and an hour later found it was still installing. One
window showed it would complete in 29 seconds. 15 minutes later it hadn't
changed. I terminated the install.

Once again I called Adobe, and they said to uninstall the program. I tried
that via the Ctrl Panel, but it protested and told me it couldn't do it,
since an update was underway. I then downloaded the update file, and tried
it. Same result.

How do I uninstall Acrobat?

That would be a question for Adobe tech support, you could also try
their support forums.

I called Adobe, and they wanted money to solve the problem, which they seem
to have created! I posted there, but have not gotten a response. Next I'll
go to Google with the 1500 error.

Well, wouldn't you know? I decided to go back the forum, and found this
solution, MS clean-up installer, <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301>.
I'll give it a try.

When I see the Windows Installer issue, I delete all the files associated
with the offending app then run a registry cleaner to remove all references
of it from the registry. If there is no signt of it it is hard to install or
complete one. Of course running the Windows Installer claener might help
after this...

Why ask here? Do you see Adobe or Acrobat in this group's title? No.

Ask elsewhere
Apparently, you missed a post or two above on other places I've tried.

Doesn't MS have some responsibility for handling installs, if only in some
indirect way? How about the MS Install Cleaner.

On that, I cannot install cleaner, since the Acrobat install seems suspended
and XP doesn't quite know what to do about getting by it.

W. eWatson, if you are new here, you won't realize that I didn't write
the rude message quoted above. It was written by a well-known troll in
this newsgroup, who seems to get a weird kick out of impersonating me.

Ah, that creep again. "Damn those eyes.", "Too late." -- From Young
Frankenstein.

So here's the current story. An Adobe Tech Note says there are two ways to
handle this.

1. regedit the ...\Inprogress key. Delete it. I'm not sure that even worked.
I deleted something there, there was only one line. What I see now is the
entry: (default) REG_SZ (value not set). This did not correct the situation.

2. Use msiexec /unreg and /regserver. This use resulted in the message
Another install is in process.
