What in the Vista line-up is most like XP Pro? I'm thinking of moving ahead
one one of my computers.

Ultimate.

That said, wait for Win 7. Vista is the Windows Me of NT.

First be aware that Vista requires more memory than XP and a better video
card than XP would need.

XP vs. Vista Features:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/features/138195/xp-vs-vista.html

For Vista PC requirements see:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/systemrequirements.mspx

Choose the edition of Vista that best meets your needs:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx

Windows XP Professional System Requirements:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx

For XP Home PC requirements see:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/systemrequirements.mspx

Just keep in mind that these are minimum requirements and in reality XP
really likes 348 to 512MB of memory and Vista at least 1GB of memory
although 2GB is preferred. Vista also needs a mid to upper end graphics card
if you plan to take advantage of the 'Aero'

Why do you want to downgrade? ;-)

What's the attraction of Vista?

I've looked, but nothing jumped out at me.... OTOH, I didn't look
very hard or very long.

well, vista is a change
of pace and there is
a program from microsoft
that you can run to examine
the pc and let you know
if it is compatible or where
you need to upgrade, if any.

however, you might simply
want to wait for the release
of windows 7, instead of
investing in vista at this time.

It isn't cost effective to upgrade either of my systems to meet Vista's
requirements. In fact, it might not be possible unless I would be willing
to upgrade to Vista Basic. So, unless there is an unexpected meltdown,
Vista is not in my future plans.

My target PC is less than two years old and has a decent amount (I've
forgotten) amount of memory. I can likely beef it up if necessary. The video
card is pretty current.

I see Win 7 is in Beta. Any idea when it advances to full distribution?

It seems like we will be "driven" there eventually, or Win 7, and my main
(XP) PC is getting a bit on in years. To prepare for it's demise, I thought
I'd familiarsize myself with Vista by starting on a lesser used PC.

Then you should be good to go, just check
to be certain you have all the Vista drivers.

Verify that you have the Windows XP Key code
just in case you need it. Same for application CD(s)
and their key codes.

Also keep in mind that Windows 7 will be
available in about 1 year.

Probably a year or two, and at that point, it will have exactly the same
kinds of problems that XP and Vista had at first release. You will have
simply waited for a different set of problems.

There are lots of people, including myself, who use Vista successfully.
Yes, it took a little tweaking; so did XP.

I chose Vista Business. The alternate was Ultimate, which contains the
Business features, but includes stuff I don't need.

You will need to spend a little time tweaking it to get it to behave as you
wish, just as you would have had to when XP was new. In particular, pay
attention to UAC and understand account permissions. You may want to turn
off UAC.

You should understand that Vista requires better hardware and more
horsepower than XP, and the base Vista install is considerably larger than
XP.

Vista isn't really for "lesser" PC's. You may find that more frustrating
than edifying.

That said, I regularly find 3gHz dual-core PC's used, that either have or
can support more than 2 gig ram, for $200 or so (no monitor), and as a base
that will work. The embedded cards often aren't enough for the Vista
Aero display. And a 40 or 80 gig drive isn't enough.

In the end, if you don't have a compelling need to shift, you are doing it
for entertainment or educational purposes. That's fine, but you need to
understand what your reason is. There aren't many situations where you
absolutely cannot use XP and have to use Vista.

No date has been announced, and it will released when Microsoft deems
that the results of beta testing have been good enough to release it.
*Nobody* knows for sure when that will be, but rumors are that it will
be about a year from now.

Whether you want to believe such rumors is up to you.

I've always believed if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If XP has suited you
til now, stay with it until Windows 7 comes out.
