This is why it is much nicer to have your OS on one drive
and your data on another drive. You now have several options:

a) The Safe Way
- Buy an 80 GByte hard disk
- Install it as a slave drive
- Copy your music files to the slave drive
- Make sure they are all there
- Disconnect the slave drive (to eliminate any risk)
- Re-install WinXP on drive C:.
- Reconnect the slave drive.

b) The Risky Way
- Buy a partition manager (e.g. from Acronis).
- Resize drive C: so that you have 10 GBytes of
free space at the start of the disk.
- Re-install WinXP in the empty partition.

Option b) is risky. Resizing partitions with partition
managers is non-distructive but accidents do happen.
On the other hand, since you are probably fully aware
of the need to back up all your important files to an
independent medium, you have nothing to fear.

You really need another hard drive. failing that i suggest you obtain third
party partitioning software - i prefer partition magic (now owned by Norton)
and partition you hard drive to create two partitions.
Partitioning can be risky when your data is important. I've never had any
problems resizing partitions etc, but there is always the first time. An
alternative is to get the 35GB of music off your hard drive an onto DVD's
Once the music data is safely backed up you can then think about
reinstalling xp. If you have a boxed retail version of xp rather than your
pc manufacturer's recovery disks you might even consider a 'repair' install.
This will refresh all the windows xp files. However, if you really want to
get rid of all the 'rubbish' on your system then a clean install is much
preferred.

Not sure what you mean by "refresh," MM, but you do have the option of a
Repair Install of XP, which would likely leave all your files intact. (A DVD
burner for backing up is not a bad idea in your case, however.)

If you have data files you don't want to lose, you must invest in
some sort of backup system. If you don't have a second harddrive,
you should write your music files to CDs or DVDs before messing
with your C drive. Lot's of work? Sure it is. If you'd rather play
Russian Roulette with your data, that's fine with me.

I suspect what you really need to do is clear the adware and
malware crap off your drive, get rid of all the junk programs and
useless files, and do a defrag. Reinstalling Windows is seldom
necessary.

The smart way would be to buy a second harddrive and install it,
buy Ghost 9 for doing mirror backups of your entire boot drive
onto your new drive, and buy Partition Magic so that you can
resize your partitions when necessary, if you insist on
partitioning your drives (partitions are more trouble than they
are worth).

But the repair install should not be done without a backup of important
data.
