Uninstall XP Pro and Deactivation

P

Peter

Does any one know if there is a way that I can uninstall
XP Pro from my computer and deactivate the product key so
I can install XP Pro on another home computer? I should
also mention that there is no option for me to uninstall
XP Pro in the Add/Remove Programs module of the Control
Panel.

If I can't uninstall it, is it possible to at least
deactivate the product key, install XP Pro on the new
computer and then overwrite the XP Pro OS on the old home
computer with another OS such as Windows 98 so as not to
violate the license agreement? Any information on this
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards,

Peter

I'm not an authority on the subject, but I know a little. If you can
uninstall XP at all while using the computer, it could only be done from
the console, unless you have another operating system to do it.

You'll probably have to call MS and explain your circumstances. If you
have an OEM version of XP, it is my understanding that you may not
transfer it to another computer. Whether or not this is true, you can try
to convince them that you made extensive hardware changes that caused your
new computer not to be recognized properly. Probably the first thing to do
is to try to activate XP with the new computer, and when it doesn't work,
I imagine they'll give you the number to call to speak to an MS
representative.

Greetings --

There is no "de-activation" process, as such.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:
