You probably did not save the previous operating system
image during Setup, or the image was deleted.

You cannot use Add/Remove to uninstall an operating
system. If you want to completely erase Windows XP from
your computer, one way is to use the format command. But
be aware that all data will be erased from the disc or
partition where the operating system resides. This action
is usually taken to remove an operating system and
reinstall the same or another one. Careful that you
understand what you are doing before you act. I would
suggest that you ask a few more questions.

Yes you can uninstall a copy of XP provided the following apply

1.) The XP was installed as an upgrade over a previous version of
Windows

2.) The option to save the previous OS during setup was taken

3.) The drive was not converted to NTFS from FAT

If all these apply then you do have the option in add/remove programs
to uninstall XP

Greetings --

If you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup the
old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, then all
you need do is boot into Safe Mode and Start > Control Panel >
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions _must_ be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

You cannot uninstall an OS like a program. To remove it boot off the
XP CD and use Drive Setup screen to delete or format the XP
partitions. This will remove OS, Programs and any Data.
