Hi there.

I installed Windows 2000, and then put XP on my machine.
I must have made a wrong selection during the XP setup,
cos I still have Windows 2000 on my system, and i am
given the choice which operating system I want to load
when I boot my machine up. How can I get rid of Windows
2000?

If its on a seperate partition then you can delete it, if
not then you may have to format your hard drive and
reinstall xp.

Can you actually boot into Windows 2000? If not, then its probably just a
left over entry. If you can, then yes, you can remove it but you need to
exercise a little caution. Contrary to The Painter's advice, you do NOT
have to reformat.

If you can't boot into Windows 2000, go to Control Panel, System, Advanced,
Startup and Recovery, Settings. In the System Startup section click the
Edit button. This opens BOOT.INI in Notepad. Remove the reference to the
Windows 2000 installation.

If you can boot the computer into Windows 2000, then you have a dual boot
installation. Determine which hard disk Windows 2000 is installed on, then
boot the computer into Windows XP. On the Windows 2000 drive, remove the
WINNT folder and then modify BOOT.INI as above. You can remove other files
and folders on the Windows 2000 drive, but you MUST leave the following:

BOOT.INI
NTLDR
NTDETECT.COM

You probably won't be able to remove PAGEFILE.SYS as it will be in use by
XP.

If you need more information, reply with more information about your system
setup (number of hard disks/partitions and which OS is installed where).
