I have to place floppy to start Windows XP ????

I was using Windows XP (No service packs) and wanted to install Wnidows
2000 (Dual-Boot) because I wanted a server operating system for MS-SQL
to run. When I tried installing from within Windows XP, it said, I
cannot install because I have the latest operating system already. Then
I booted the PC with Windows 98 bootable floppy disk taking the "Boot
with CD-ROM" option. Then I executed the winnt.exe file from the \i386
folder.

It still did not install. The inital stages were fine, it copied all
necessary files but then gave me an error "Line 7721 of the INF file is
invalid" Setup cannot continue, press any key to exit.

The 7721 line in the file TXTSETUP.txt was : a221264.p64 =
1,,,,,,_x,1,
I tried adding 3 at the end (a221264.p64 = 1,,,,,,_x,1,3) becuase the
previous two lines were:
[SourceDisksFiles.axp64]
a121165.p64 = 1,,,,,,_x,1,3
a221164.p64 = 1,,,,,,_x,1,3
a221264.p64 = 1,,,,,,_x,1,

I tried a lot but unable to install Windows 2000 for a dual-boot.

------------------------

Now I do not want Windows 2000 and now I have screwed up my Windows XP.
When I boot it used to give me three options:
Windows XP
C: Previous operating system
Windows 2000 Setup/Upgrade

I have a floppy with the following files:
Boot.ini
NTDETECT
NTLDR

When I put the floppy in the drive and boot the machine, it goes to
Windows XP and everything runs fine.

Then I copied boot.ini file from the floppy in my C:\ but when I boot
my computer it gives me the following error and stalls the machine.

Starting Windows ...
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMd startup options for Windows 2000,
press F8

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows 2000
Setup using the original setup floppy disk or CD-Rom
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

Again if I put the floppy in the drive and boot the machine, it works.

Can somebody help me correct the boot.ini so that the computer starts
without the floppy?

Thanks
Maxi

Can you post boot.ini? Probably should be;

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Thank you Dave and Carey

Issue resolved

After reading the link provided by Carey
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283433/), I copied NTLDR and NTDETECT
file from the floppy drive in my C:\ folder and it did the trick.

But I am still struggling dual booting XP and W2K Server. The article
says that I have to install W2K Server first but I don't want to do
that.
