How to create XP boot floppy with CHKDSK?

Jason

Hello,

I would like to create an XP Professional boot, floppy disk with CHKDSK on
it as I need to repair a pc with a suspected corrupt file system.
Unfortunately I can't get the machine to boot from the XP CDROM, I know the
machine is looking doomed but I'd like to try & run CHKDSK /R from a floppy
before I give up.

I have read a few articles about this but I'm not sure how the boot.ini
file should read? I know the disk should contain NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM &
boot.ini as well as CHKDSK.EXE. Can anyone supply the text of a boot.ini
file that will enable me to boot straight from the floppy & run CHKDSK /R?

TIA, Jason.

Two points:

1. If you boot from a floppy, you're necessarily booting to some version of
DOS, not Windows. So there is no boot.ini file that can be used.

2. If your drive's file system is NTFS, your DOS boot diskette won't see it
(at least not without special third-party software). Even if you used such
special software, I'm not sure whether it would work with a disk utility
like chkdsk.

To boot Windows XP to the Recovery Console using floppies you need a
set of 6 disks which you can download the disk images for from
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994

Or you can create a bootable CD to run a stripped down version of
Windows XP using Bart's PE Builder from http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Good luck
