Uninstall/reinstall JRE

Forgive my technical ignorance, but any help would be much
appreciated. I had problems accessing an online bank which used Java
at login and, on their advice (rather unwisely, as they did say their
suggestions were not guaranteed to work) made some changes to Java,
via the Control Panel. To cut a long story short, I now cannot open
Java any longer and when I try to reinstall/download updates etc, I
get the message: 'Error applying transforms etc etc', which seems
not
uncommon. The big problem is that, when I try to follow the usually
suggested solution, by downloading and using the Windows Install
Cleanup tool, this does not show anything to do with Java in the list
of installed applications, so I can't remove the debris that there
presumably is on the system. When I search for files etc with Java
in
the name there are, of course, absolutely loads. System Restore
hasn't worked either. I really do have no technical knowledge, but I
would be really grateful for any reasonably idiot-proof solutions. I
am grateful to anyone who has taken the time to read and respond to
this.

Go to; Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs
Remove any/all Sun Java software.

Download "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1" and install it.

Frequently, when this sort of problem arises, you need to re-install to be
able to uninstall.. So, head over to the Sun Java site and re-dowload and
install it.

This is a reply to both the previous posters, to both of whom I am
grateful for the time they have taken to read and respond to my
question.
I have tried uninstalling via Add/Remove programs etc, but the problem
is that nothing to do with Java is listed there (the Java icon is
present when I go to Control Panel, but nothing can be opened, because
(from what I understand of the message) the Registry Key is missing).
When I try to reinstall Java, I get the "Error applying
transforms..."
Any other thoughts (and thanks for your time)?

Please look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version.

Such as...
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01

What do YOU have ?

I am also having great difficulty in installing the above update of
Java. I have been getting downloads automatically, indicated by a
message and a symbol in systray, but each time the Windows installer
tells me that the downloaded package is not a valid installation file.
I checked the Java folder and found that I had several different
levels of rel 5 installed, (presumably an update does not remove or
replace the previous release) so I used add/remove programs to remove
them all. But the 6.0_01 download still gives me the same invalid
download message. And now, of course, I have no Java.

Never let Sun Java do an auto-update. Always download the full EXE installation file and
manually install Sun Java.

Thank you for your help, David.

In C:\Program Files, I have no Java folder at all
In C:\Windows, I have a folder called 'Sun', within which are 'Java'
and 'Deployment', although these are empty.
In Control Panel, I have the Java icon, but clicking on it brings up
the following message: 'H_KEY_LOCALMACHINE\JAVASOFT\JAVA RUNTIME
ENVIRONMENT\1.5.0_06
When I try to download from the Java site, I get the 'transforms'
error message I have mentioned before and yet the Windows Install
Cleanup tool doesn't find Java to clear away!
Thanks again for your time

Thanks, Dave. I shall remember in future. I am now up and running
with 6.0_01. I found, from add/delete programs, that I had four
previous versions installed. After I had uninstalled them the file
for the immediately-previous version was still in program files/Java,
so I deleted it, cleaned up the registry with System Mechanic and then
downloaded the latest version for an offline install. That worked
without a hitch.
