Uninstall problems, possibly associated with Symantec product.

Attempting to install Symantec SystemWorks2004 (to upgrade a failing 2002
version) failed with "Setup has encountered a problem...." message. On
attempting to uninstall NSW 2002 first, via. Control Panel, I get "Run DLL
as an app has encountered a problem & must close...." message.
On further investigation, I find the same problem when attempting to
uninstall *any* application (not Symantec related) that has separate Change
and Remove buttons. If a single button only exists, marked Change/Remove,
then the uninstaller appears to work. Therefore I have concluded that the
fact that although the problem was discovered on removing a Symantec
product, this is a red herring and the problem is not associated with
Symantec, but is an XP problem on my machine. This problem is probably the
reason that LiveUpdate will not install certain upgrades, the reason that I
was upgrading from the unsupported 2002 product.

Until I can get this fixed, I am unable to get new virus definitions
correctly and need to find a fix quick!!

I have contemplated a repair install of XP. but am somewhat wary of losing
aspcts of my beautifully (!!) crafted configuration and application setup,
although it is supposed to preserve the machine data & setup..

Any help will be gratefully received.

TIA James :-)

Use the following tool:

Afterware, try installing Norton 2004 once again.

Hi Carey :-)

You mentioned
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

but this tool is not intended for use if NAV is installed as part of
SystemWorks. As I mentioned, I cannot Change or Remove ANY application for
which the entry in Add/Remove Programs has separate buttons for Change and
Remove. This is so even for applications that are *unrelated* to
Norton/Symantec.

But the problem has been detected because of my wish to install a
SystemWorks upgrade. Whatever has gone wrong may have pre-existed for some
weeks undetected until I tried this operation. A System Restore from a month
ago (the earliest I still have) does not correct the problem.

TIA James :-)

I don't usually agree with Carey on anything.... but this time I
agree with his solution. Use the Rnav2003.exe removal tool as it
works just fine with SystemWorks. I've used it several times that
way.

Having said the above, - save yourself a big headache and pack up
NSW 2004, send it back to Symantec and ask for a full refund.
Anything Norton 2004 has been problematic for many people.

I use SystemWorks Pro 2003 which thus far has worked well. Of course
I didn't install all the junk. Just installed NAV 2003 and Ghost
2003.
