Uninstall desktop virus?

Has anyone experienced a virus that uninstalls the desktop? I am running
WinXP HE v2002SP2. This "thing" caused the desktop to be blank except for the
icons. Also, right clicking on the desktop did not bring up the properties
box to make any changes. I just ran Symantec Anti-virus and it identified the
"uninstdsk.exe" as a trojan horse and quarantined it. However, the desktop
was still blank and still no properties box. Going through the "Control
Panel", Desktop", "Customize Desktop", "Web" tab, there was an item called
"Uninstall Desktop" that was checked. I unchecked the box and now have the
desktop picture back along with right click functions. However, how do I
completely remove this "Uninstall" option?

I'd make a trip to the Symantec site and see if there is more
information there. Often when you get hit with things like that
there are tasks still to be done that the av cannot do. It's
great you have the info you need to search on - worth checking.

I got curious: Try here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.alemod.b.html

IF that's it, there's a LONG dissertation on it. It's also
fairly new and would be subject to there being different variants
of it.
I found it by searching for the exe file you posted.

Instead of choosing to quarantine the item choose to delete it. I also
suggest you reboot and go into safe mode and run the Virus check. TTFN.
