Sam

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) with the
latest MS Security updates installed. I also have NAV 2006, BoClean,
SpywareBlaster, and Zonealarm Pro. I should mention that I keep all of my
security programs updated on a daily basis.

This morning I noticed an unusual file in the C:\ directory - Name: UNUSUAL
NOTEBOOK DESKTOP.INI, dated 4/14/2006, size 1kb. Content inside the file is
as follows:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

Any comments and suggestions would be very much appreciated, Sam.

Hi Sam,
did a Google on the file that is in question and came up with nothing on the
file that you had posted.
i would say that that file would have something to do with your notebook
computer in reference to one of your computer's ini files.
if that file is no longer neede then it would probably be safe to delete it.
good luck and hope this helps you.

Have you or anyone attempted to connect a laptop to this system.

The file is a desktop.ini, which is used to indicate the name for the folder
it was placed in.

In this case:

LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

reflects the name Startup. So this used to be in a folder with the name
Startup.

Thanks very much for your replies. My computer is a standalone computer and
has not had any connections with a laptop. I think tonight I will change
the file extension from .INI to XXX and see if there are any problems.

I am very careful about what web sites I visit and very cautious when I open
any emails (very few in fact!!), but still end up with some weird file??!!
If I find any thing of significance will post back. Thanks again, Sam.

Any comments and suggestions would be very much appreciated, Sam.
First, unhide "Hidden Files":
Open any folder, click "Tools", "Folder Options", and the "View" tab.
Check the box, "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types",
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files", Click "Apply", "OK"

Now look for, and delete, the "Desktop.ini" file in any of the below folders:
C: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ START Menu \ Programs \ Startup
C: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ START Menu \ Programs
C: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ START Menu

Or...

Click Start -> Run -> and in the Run box, type: msconfig and click OK
Click the "Startup" tab, and uncheck any box that has "desktop" under the "startup item"
and the location shown as "Common Startup"

I don't think it's a good idea to delete Desktop.ini files under these
folders. Some of these desktop.ini files have pertinent information in them
pertaining to the folder, such as resource string names, and Icon
information as well as what to do on CopyAndDelete information.

Larry, thanks very much for your reply. I agree and am a bit reluctant to
delete any Desktop.ini file that has been on my computer for over a year
(actually of the three places recommended by Unk for deletion, the first two
did not have any Desktop.ini files, and the third place (All Users\START
Menu did have a Desktop.ini file. However it has a very early date, whereas
the unusual file in question is a very recent file. I should note that last
night I changed the extension of the file in question and so far this
morning, have not noticed any problems. If this continues, probably will
delete the file in the next five days.
Unk, I do thank you for your reply. Best wishes, Sam.
