Unicode-friendly editor that won't modify the Registry

Does anyone know of a Unicode-friendly text editor that won't modify the
Registry and can be used portably? I have been using Notepad2 and TED
Notepad for months now, but both store settings in the Windows Registry. I
found PSPad but I can't get Unicode Japanese characters to appear in it. Any
suggestions?

Please see HelpMaker - www.vizacc.com
It has a full unicode editor.

Hello, J44xm,

SciTE (http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html) is portable and I *think* it
does what you want (don't have Asian fonts right now, to check). You
will have to set some settings in the properties file.

Search this file for "Japanese":
http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/SciTEDoc.html
The file is also included in the download package.

For SciTE in portable mode: http://www.kikizas.net/en/usbapps.html

BTW, why don't you add a special section to your freeware list, for
freeware with full Unicode support? Or add a Unicode symbol next to
Unicode programs already in the list? This would be useful to many people.

Greetings,

Thanks much! I'll check it out.

Thanks for the tip. I generally make a small comment about Unicode for
programs that it's important on (mainly text editors), but it might indeed
be a good idea to really keep an eye on this, since it's of growing
importance these days.
