Unexplained CPU Usage

I have an unusual situation(don't we all!)
My system is running horribly slow. When I start TASK Mgr it shows SYSTEM
constantly running at 90%+ even with no processes running. System IDLE which
normally indicated 90%+ is now at 0%. The hard drive may or may not be
active. Nothing new has been installed. The network cable can be
disconnected. Virus scans, ADAware and Spybot indicate no problems.
System is running XP SP2 which updates via MS auto update.
Any ideas where to look.
Thanks, Tom

services.exe 480 Eventlog, PlugPlay

These are the two services that Services normally host. Type tasklist /svc to see yours. I guess it's either the eventlog (something writing to it perhaps) or hardware.

Process Explorer from SysInternals, Also their FileMon program.
Process explorer should allow you to expand/detail info about the
PC. Filemon can show you Disk activity in real time (Has a log so
you can back trace stats).

I built a system once that always showed some (20-30%) CPU activity but
System Idle Activity was 99%. I traced it down to a driver issue. When I
went into motherboard BIOS and disabled Soundblaster sound card
compatibility mode for onboard sound, it fixed the problem.

What are the switches needed to just see PID 480? How do you stop it
scrolling?

The Tasklist switch options are difficult to understand if you view them
using Tasklist /?. Can you provide a more easily understood source of
the syntax etc for using switches please.

Thanks for the replies.
TASKLIST doesn't seem to be on my system.
I did a dir task*.exe /s and only get taskman or taskmgr.
I am not running any sound apps. This occurs when NO apps are running.
I did look in the SYSTEM event log and found some ERRORS from DCOM, acpi and
SCM. Gotta go research them and possible causes.
I am beginning to think it is a hardware(interrupt) situation. I am saying
this because the clock is loosing time.

Any extra input welcome!

Thanks, Tom

If you are using Windows XP Home Edition you may need to Download
Tasklist.exe.

Tasklist.exe available here:
http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm

To benefit from David's advice you need to select Start, Run, type "Cmd"
without the quotes to get a Command Prompt. At the Command Prompt type
"cd\" without the quotes and hit ENTER. Then type "tasklist /svc"
without the quotes and hit ENTER.

It's there I encountered a problem and I am hoping to see a further
message from David Candy on how to resolve the problem.

BTW to exit from a Command Prompt type "exit" without the quotes and hit
ENTER

OK, I got/ran TASKLIST. didn't reveal anything new. Just shows N/A in the
services column for System in the Image Name column.
Is anyone familiar or experienced in running debug for a running
system/kernel task to see where it is spending it's time.

Thanks, again.

FIXED!!!!!!!!!!
Hold onto your mouse. All I did was unplug my system from AC power, waited 1
min+/- plug in and power up. All is well. It appears it is related to
ACPI/battery/AC.
