Unexpected shutdowns

I have recently returned to my winter address after 5
months away. Stared up my Dell 8200 with XP and all fine.
After about five minutes on the net (dial-up only
connection available in my area)I got a pop up which said
NT Authority/system will shut down your computer in 40
seconds ... save your stuff etc. Also something
about "Remote Procedure Call". Computer shut down despite
frantic attempts to stop the foolisness...

Stared it up again .. reconnected to the net and after
awhile did it again.... and again... and again. I suspect
something to do with activation but I have had this
computer for several years with an early version of XP
(all available updates installed) and never had this
problem before. I have changed the disk partitions
several times with Partition Magic but no recent changes
and no new hardware. HELP
