Unexpected shut downs

I am trying to track down a random shutdown issue. I am so far unable to
locate the info and or tools to solve this issue.

My computer is a Compaq laptop with a processer that is not really designed
for laptops so it normally runs hot. The shutdowns that I am experiencing are
random, and with no error messages. I get a dark screen and a computer that I
have to reboot. The shut down is instant, there is no file maintance, closing
of programs, etc. It just shuts down.

Although I do not think this is a heat issue as my fans are working well and
ramping up and the grills are not blocked. I would like to know if there are
tools that will tell me what is happening when the shut down happens. I have
tried to examine the console. I have also searched the MSKB but I can not
find a description of my problem.

Goal for this posting: To be pointed towards the correct info and tools to
solve this problem.

On my laptop, it was a heat issue. The thermal grease had gotten hard. Also,
there was dust in the heat sink that could not be blown out from the outside.
YMMV.

I need to close this thread. Solution found. It was a heat issue. I took
computer apart and found a "mat" of dust blocking an air passage. Computer
running very cool now and seems to be working. I had blown out the computer
with the case on it. I guess that is how I missed it. Thanks for the reply
